Foods That Lower Blood Sugar

Foods that lower your blood sugar can generally be classified as having low glycemic indexes, made of complex carbohydrates, and having excellent anti-inflammatory properties. Foods with a low glycemic index (GI) or having values of 55 GI or less include most fruits and vegetables, whole or minimally processed grains, beans, pasta, low-fat dairy products, and nuts.

Complex carbohydrates are found in foods such as peas, beans, whole grains, and vegetables. Foods with anti-inflammatory properties are rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals.

Apples

Did you know that apples lower blood sugar?  The antioxidants in apples have been linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Researchers found that quercetin and phloridzin reduce insulin resistance, one of the biggest risk factors for diabetes.

Other compounds found in apples include adiponectin, which can help regulate blood glucose levels. These compounds have many other health benefits, including lowering the risk of developing diabetes.

Citrus Fruits

Among the highest sources of vitamin C, citrus fruits have been shown to lower blood sugar levels. These fruits also have a wide range of other beneficial effects, such as strengthening the immune system and helping to prevent diabetes and prediabetes.

They are also rich in flavonoids, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties. The antioxidant effects of these fruit types may even help prevent cancer. In addition, citrus fruits can lower blood sugar levels and prevent the development of type 2 diabetes.
