Tinnitus Symptoms, Signs, Causes, And Treatments

10. Ringing

The roaring sound can also be caused by foreign objects or earwax. The auditory nerve interprets these signals and sends them to the brain. The result, of which, is an abnormal ringing sound.

The ringing sound can last for a couple of minutes. In some cases, it can last longer. The noise produced is annoying.

9. Clicking

The clicking sound can be caused by an abnormal spasm in certain muscle groups in the ear. A spasm of these muscles will cause the eardrum to vibrate, causing a clicking or popping sound.

Some patients may experience this noise after experiencing a loud noise or stress. Another common cause of a clicking sound is a problem with the temporomandibular joint, which connects the jaw to the rest of the head.

8. Hissing

The hissing sound that usually comes with tinnitus can also be caused by stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety can affect the hearing system, causing noises in the ear. Often, this is a result of a person’s limbic system, a part of the brain that responds to perceived threats by triggering the release of hormones and an increased sense of alertness.

This system evolved to help humans survive in a world of danger. The response to perceived threats often triggers the “fight or flight” response and alertness.

7. Humming

The humming sound may be a form of tinnitus called pulsatile tinnitus. This condition is caused by abnormal blood flow in the ears, capillaries, and arteries. The changes in blood flow can trigger the humming sound.

The sound may also be accompanied by heart palpitations or a sensation of lightheadedness. It can be painful.
